Bathroom Before and After

So here's what my bathroom looked like when I bought my house:

Here was what I lived with for months:

And here's the after:

In looking at my numbers tracking, there are a few things that still need to be added to my sheet: lumber and paint for the baseboards, the new tile at the vanity, and some bits and bobs here and there. So all the following is approximates, given that I forgot to add some things to my budget. The cost of the bathroom renovation, not including the window, was around $1,300. The window addition was $2,016.98 before tax. The total cost of the renovation as it stands was about $3,500. My ballpark budget for the non-window parts of bathroom was $1,900, so that feels pretty great!

I think one of the most amazing parts of this project is how much paint does. Even when I was living with primed and not painted walls and before the addition of the window, it was just so much brighter in the bathroom than the green. I'm not a huge fan of glossy paint (see my matte walls everywhere else in the house!) but I'm glad I did go with a glossier finish (satin?). It helps with cleanup, definitely, but also it bounces light around the space.

The addition of the window (holy light, batman!) was probably the best choice I made - having natural light in the bathroom works wonders for lightening up the space and making it feel less closed in. It's a north facing window; I don't think it receives ANY direct light, but that doesn't really even matter. As my dad said on one of his visits - "You can use the bathroom without turning any lights on!"

All the black hardware makes things crisp and modern - but the colors, in the vanity, the baseboards, and the shower curtain keep things from feeling cold. And mom's bathroom vanity find brings in another mirror, and more black - but the antiqued mirror helps make the whole bathroom feel less 'new'.

There are a few things I still want to do - vanity knobs and pulls, eventually a single rug, I want to figure out a low light plant to put in the corner of the shower. . . but these are all very minor things! I hung the shower curtain pretty high, because I needed clearance from the surround. It makes the shower curtain feel short, though getting the trim piece added to the tub really helped. I do sometimes ponder getting window curtains and hanging them instead, but I really love the colors and the potted cacti, so maybe not! Basically the bathroom is done and I couldn't be happier. It's also such a relief to come into the bathroom and have it be bright and light and most importantly, functional!
